Bridget’s Narconon Success Story

"Sunday November 16th D-day landing for me at Narconon. First stop Withdrawals and I must say a huge thanks to the guys who took such great care of me and initially my pal – the bucket!

Bridget with Michelle

A withdrawal encompasses a world of Vitamins and Minerals, lots of help, walking, and in my case, lots of it! A much needed restoring process that got me back to a ‘normal’ level of being in readiness for the next stage - the course room and getting to know everyone. I was blessed with sharing a room with a wonderful girl called Michelle known more lovingly as Eggshell.

Into the course room and Communication Exercises - to those not in the know they are routines which help you get your brain back into order. They certainly did the trick and are quite good fun as well.

Next up the Sauna – hot & sweaty Betty! I managed quite well, I feel really great – all the toxins gone from my body and my mind was clear and sharp – I knew I was ready to tackle the course room.

All the Books and Communication Exercises collectively teach you how to see life now as it is today – how to identify where you’re at, how to handle and correct the past and importantly how to manage/handle future situations/circumstances that you will encounter.

It was here that I really got to grips with the world and how each person can affect the outcome of life and survival itself.

Each book in itself is invaluable and links through a logical path, but I have to say that in particular I loved Books 6 & 7 – Personal Values and Integrity & Changing Conditions in Life. I found that they hit home a lot of truths. I had to confront issues about myself, family, friends and the world that we all inhabit. The outcome... fantastic.

I know that I will survive and will live a Drug free, good and healthy life and will be a happy person – in fact that’s exactly what I am today.

As a final, I must say again HUGE, ENORMOUS Thanks to all the staff at Narconon who have all played a part in putting me back to where I am today - Angela, Kurt, Cheryl, Gregg, Ali, Said, Walter, Bibeck, Animesh, Bale, David, Samir, Brett, Mike, Shaun, Sofia & Miguel.

& last but not least

All the students who together make up a fantastic team - one that I’m proud to have been a part of."

Bridget S.

NARCONON® HASTINGS - Saving Lives

So here we are at Narconon Hastings. No matter what is happening in the world we are here and we continue with what we are here for. We are here for you and our purpose is saving lives.

Ali with Michael L. having completed the Communication Course

We want all of you to participate in and enjoy our success. Maybe you can make it go right to come here and do the program or you can help someone else to come here, or you can sponsor those that are here already...

Nepal Trainee Bal with students in course room

Here is a quote from ‘The Way to Happiness’ book which is studied here at the end of the program:

“One can feel at times like a spinning leaf blown along a dirty street, one can feel like a grain of sand stuck in one place but nobody has said that life was a calm and orderly thing: it isn’t.

One isn’t a tattered leaf nor a grain of sand: one can, to greater or lesser degree draw his road map and follow it.

One can feel that things are such now that it is much too late to do anything, that one’s past road is so messed up that there is no chance of drawing a future one that will be any different: there is always a point on the road when one can map a new one.

And try to follow it.

There is no person alive who can not make a new beginning.”

Regaining Personal Integrity

Student successes at Narconon Hastings

Hello,

Towards the end of the Narconon program, the students study a course called the 'Personal Values and Integrity Course’. This is where our students fully recognise the consequences of their actions, learn the true meaning of ‘responsibility’ and regain their personal integrity.

Life can be somewhat inconsequential to a drug addict and it can be all too easy to become involved in non-survival activities which propel a person down the slippery slope. As we are basically good, these actions can make a person feel very guilty and unhappy and become, in themselves, a barrier to living a drug-free life.

Through this course, a better understanding of ethics and morals is achieved and our students are able to take responsibility for the past and unburden themselves from the effects of behaviour which have been damaging to self and others. The relief from being able to do this is so special and gives a person a chance to change his ways and be who he or she really is with a renewed sense of right and wrong, a light heart and a genuine smile!

Here’s what a couple of our students have to say about this course:

"This book was very enjoyable to study. It was very interesting. The subjects covered in the book have taught me a lot about myself and my life. Finishing this course, I feel even more clear headed and happy than I did before! I didn’t think I could feel any better. I feel physically and mentally freer and lighter. I am very, very Happy! This book is Ace!" J.S.

"Well I was told that this course would get better and better - I just didn’t believe it. I have gained even more skills which just blow me away. Today, from here on, to be honest, truthful and without withholds. From the earliest age I was dishonest. This trait continued throughout my adult life. I have seen the real damage that I have caused primarily to myself but also to other parts of my life and to my family especially. It has freed my mind of some dark secrets. I feel very happy. I will grow, I just know, deep inside that I will, to be ethical in all areas of my life." J.M.

It’s so lovely to see; to watch a person break free from the shackles of the past and experience true freedom. There’s nothing like seeing our students reach inner peace. The smiling faces are priceless. My reward.

Here is a quote from the author of our methodology; the philosopher and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard:

“The addict has been found not to want to be an addict, but is driven by pain and environmental hopelessness.

As soon as an addict can feel healthier and more competent mentally and physically without drugs than he does on drugs, he ceases to require drugs.”

The End of an Existence - Said's Story

Living Life Again

"The day has come, the journey has taken 7 months and 1 week, but the journey is far from complete. Let me take you back to how it started.

I had taken, from the age of 21, numerous types of drugs from alcohol, hash, marijuana, skunk, speed, ecstasy, magic mushrooms, trips, coke, and finally Crack. Crack was the drug that overruled all the others. This drug had taken such a hold in my life to the point that nothing mattered or existed. At the age of 27, I had a thriving locksmith business; my turnover was in excess of £100,000 a year. It had taken me 5 years to build the business, and I was looking forward to purchasing another shop in the hope of expanding, but in a matter of 3 weeks all that had changed.

I started to loose interest, I left the running of the business to a guy I employed, I went to parties eventually getting bored with this. I was out every night until the early hours of the day, smoking crack in a hotel or spending the nights in my van. The hours just disappeared.

Said Before

Said Now

I was unaware or not bothered about the time, only the fact that I had to smoke as much crack as I could before day break. I felt like a demon lurking in the shadows, afraid of the spotlights, unwashed, smelling, sweaty and unshaved.

When I had run out of cash, I would beg my dealer to supply me on tick after spending, at this time, in excess of £200 per night. But the answer would be "no cash no crack". The shakes would set in, reality started to kick in, realizing that I had a home to go to, a wife and kids asleep, unaware that I was slowly killing myself.

Time went by, eventually going bankrupt, owing £47,000. My wife decided to have a break from the stress by going to Morocco to her father and taking along the kids. While my wife was away, I decided to go on the biggest drug bender marathon. I was on my 3rd night of smoking crack with the curtains drawn, phone off the hook and the doors bolted. I continued, oblivious of my health and my surroundings at home. I had turned my house upside down inspecting any suspicious sound that I though I heard, resulting from my paranoia.

Unbeknown to me, my sister had been trying to contact me without any success until I heard knocking on the door, then I heard her voice along with her husband. I froze like a mad dog caught in a car headlights, unable to move. My heart felt like it was about to explode as I heard the key entering the lock and then the door squeaking open. The light went on, I was stood in the corridor facing the door as my sister and her husband entered. I can never forget the instant shock on my sister’s face and the embarrassed pose from her husband. She shouted out

"What have you been doing?"

I could not answer, words were rushing around my head but the sound would not come out. All I could do was gaze down like a crazed fool.

It was not until I was lead into the bathroom that I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I was drawn, skeletal and my skin was orange (yes orange, for those of you that had called me orange, you were right, little did you realize just why).

At this stage, my sister said I needed to go to rehab without fail; I agreed after summing up enough courage to accept that I was in the grip of crack and perhaps 1 or 2 days away from serious illness. I stayed with my sister for 1 week without leaving the house until I was picked up by Rob from Narconon. I had no idea what was involved, but I knew that I had just lost my liberty. The choice was simple, lose my liberty or lose my life. I chose to lose my liberty.

So my journey continued, and I entered into a new chapter of my life. Two years have now passed since I graduated the Narconon program.

Little did I realise that I was to gain more than just my liberty by going through the program and graduating. The best high is from the adrenalin rush of completing the Narconon program and achieving one's goals.

After leaving Narconon and joining my family again, life for me felt like it had just begun. I was able to secure a job without a problem and generally stabilize my life. I applied some of what I had learned through the life skills courses at Narconon to do this smoothly. I knew that by being ethical and putting my attention on the things that really mattered, I would be able to resolve problems and I did… except for one. I didn’t feel completely fulfilled. I wanted to do more in life. It wasn’t enough for me just to hold down a 9-5 job; I wanted a challenge.

I found that my addiction to drugs had been replaced by an addiction to life. I thought long and hard about which way to take my career. After being a locksmith for 25 years, I didn’t think I was qualified to do anything else, but then I realised I had actually graduated from the university of the streets after 20 years personal experience of the harmful effects of drugs. So I decided to utilize this negative experience for a positive purpose.

I am now a Narconon staff member and am dedicated to helping others to achieve what I myself have achieved. Freedom. Freedom from destruction, despair, degradation and ultimate death.

My life has completely turned around. My marriage is stronger than ever. The affinity I have for my children has increased and now I have the energy to actually keep up with them and do all the things that Dads do! I have regained a respect from my parents who had once given me up for dead. The rewards that I have gained from the changes I have made are boundless. My future is exciting to me and has endless potential. I now succeed where I once failed. I hold, within me, the ability to not only control my own destiny but to help others to regain control of theirs, so they too can experience success in life.

There’s a little piece of poetry that I hold dear, which I believe is true for many of us and that is,

“Indecision and Inaction in the Present is because of Fear of Consequence of the Future”.

So, don’t be afraid to make the change, there is nothing to be afraid of."

NARCONON HASTINGS News

New Beginnings… For Steve

Hello,

"So here I am at Narconon Hastings. I’ve been here for 5 weeks now and I definitely know I’ve made the right choice. This is the place where I can finally kick a fourteen-year habit in the teeth. I feel really at home here and didn’t realise just how stressful day-to-day life was in the condition I was in. As confusing as it was, I was always kidding myself I didn’t have a problem. I knew there were stages in my life I had to accept and couldn’t change but never had a clear head, long enough to do this.

I came to view Narconon about 9 months ago but was still reluctant because I’ve been incarcerated for many years through my life and didn’t want to get involved in any system I couldn’t control. How wrong I was! I was completely out of control of MYSELF and wasn’t in a position to achieve anything productive in my life. Now I realise what the word ‘rehabilitation’ means. I just feel so chilled out and confident, it’s unreal. Since getting clean, this is MY life now, this is no system, this is my chance to learn and restore the confidence I knew I had. It’s wicked!

This is me after completing a course

Every day at Narconon is productive. I am doing the sauna detoxification at the moment. The people are great and the laughs we have are classic. I already feel like I’ve known everybody here for years. I also go in the gym and work out regularly. Along with the lovely food from our very own Spanish chef, Miguel, I am feeling much stronger and gaining weight at a rapid rate!

Like I said, it took me 9 months to make the decision to come here but now that I am, both from meeting former students and from the natural high that I am experiencing on a daily basis, I know that I have made a life-changing move."

Narconon Hastings Community News

A Day with the Jives Aces

Hello,

Last Sunday we were invited to join the Jive Aces at the Churchill Square Shopping Centre in Brighton. The Jive Aces are a jive and swing band that have supported the Church of Scientology’s “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life” campaign for many years, giving concerts all over the world to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs.

On this particular occasion, The Jive Aces drew the crowds in Brighton, lifting the spirits of cold shoppers and Sunday strollers. The square was the perfect venue and many people took the opportunity to have a good dance. There were even professionals from dance clubs who attended specifically, knowing that the Jives were having an event.

When asked about the band's strong anti-drugs stance, lead singer Ian Clarkson said, “People look up to musicians and see them taking drugs and think that they then have to use them to be a great artist. What they don’t realise is that, without drugs, they would be a lot happier, play a lot better and live a lot longer.”

The Jive Aces and friends with Ali Withey of Narconon UK (far right)

The Jive Aces CDs were sold, information booklets on drugs were distributed and I passed around a Narconon Hastings Newsletter to introduce us and our program. We joined in the anti-drug message, were promoted as the drug-free answer to addiction and received a donation for Narconon from the Jive Aces from the sales of their CDs that day.

We’d like to thank The Jive Aces for a great day and for supporting our purpose to help people become stably drug free.

NARCONON HASTINGS - saving lives

We continue doing our job at Narconon Hastings. This is saving lives.

Narconon Hastings reception

Hello,

These last couple of weeks, we have had several people come in, not only from the UK, but also from the Isle of Man and Ireland.

We are reaching out strongly to anyone that wants to get off of drugs naturally. We continue our fundraising campaign to be able to help those who do not have the funds to sponsor the program.

We want you do the same, reach out on your community and see what is there to help you to get the funds to be able to do the Narconon Program, or any other program that does not use drugs to get off of drugs.

As I mentioned before, we keep working every day to get people off drugs and this week we reached another big accomplishment in helping someone that was taking methadone as a “Solution”; he is our most recent graduate from the Drug free Withdrawal. This is another success as he was previously on up to 80 milligrams of Methadone, and he safely finished in a matter of a week with no problems and he is now moving on to the next step of the program.

Students doing Life Skills Courses

Students doing Communication Drills

The following is a quote from The Way to Happiness Book which is written by the Philosopher and Humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, who is the author of our methodology:

BE TEMPERATE

Do not take harmful drugs.

People who take drugs do not always see the real world in front of them. They are not really there.

On a highway, in casual contact, in a home, they can be very dangerous to you. People mistakenly believe

they “feel better” or “act better” or are “only happy” when on drugs. This is just another delusion.

Sooner or later the drugs will destroy them physically. Discourage people from taking drugs.

When they are doing so, encourage them to seek help in getting off of them.

NARCONON HASTINGS - The Narconon New Life Detox Program

Narconon Hastings

The truth is, our world is swimming in toxic substances that destroy life. Extensive studies show that pollutants, drugs and chemical residues remain in a person’s body. These can dull the senses, cloud up thinking and even cause a wide range of illnesses. And worse, they block any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.

Students getting ready to go in the sauna

Three students in the Sauna

A Quote from L. Ron Hubbard, author of our methodology, regarding why the program was developed:

"We have known since 1968 that it is a mistake to try to do mental and spiritual handling on somebody who has been on drugs. People who have been on drugs do not make case gain* until the drugs are handled.

"In 1977, I stated that LSD apparently stays in the system, lodging in the tissues and mainly the fatty tissues of the body and is liable to go into action again, giving the person unpredictable 'trips.'

"From the most recent research developments, it now appears that: Not only LSD but other chemical poisons and toxins, preservatives, pesticides, etc, as well as medical drugs and the long list of heavy street drugs (angel dust, heroin, marijuana, etc.) can lodge in the tissues and remain in the body for years.

"Even medicinal drugs such as diet pills, codeine, novocaine and others have gone into 'restim' [restimulation] years after they were taken and had supposedly been eliminated from the body.

"Thus it seems that any or all of these hostile biochemical substances can get caught up in the tissues and their accumulation probably disarranges the biochemistry and fluid balance of the body.

"Drug residues can stop any mental health. They also stop a person's life!

"The removal of these life-hostile chemical substances from the body of any person apparently speeds, and in some cases even makes possible, case gain. It is even worth doing for its own sake.”

L. Ron Hubbard

Over the last ten years, I have seen so many addicts coming onto the program - underweight, with sunken cheeks, nervous, dispersed and lost. I could go on…… it never ceases to amaze me just how much change occurs through the course of the sauna program. It makes me smile, time after time, to see these students coming back to life. You see them becoming more bright, laughing again, getting colour in there faces and waking up to the everyday pleasures of life.

It IS the ‘New Life Detoxification Program’.

So come to Narconon and start a new life!

Narconon Hastings Celebrates Narconon Day!

19th February is Narconon Day

It is a very special day, for today we celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the foundation of Narconon by Mr. William Benitez.

We want to dedicate this blog post to the thousands of graduates who, since the beginning of Narconon, have turned their lives around and lived successful, productive and ethical lives together with their families. This is the story of how that became possible.

February 19th is the official anniversary of the Narconon Drug Rehabilitation and Education Program. Here's how it all began:

L. Ron Hubbard - Philosopher and Humanitarian

William Benitez - Narconon Founder

William Benitez was a heroin-addicted inmate of Arizona State Prison. Having tried all existing methods to escape his addiction, he continued to search for a way out. In the prison library he came across a book written by L. Ron Hubbard, The Fundamentals of Thought, which outlined an entirely new approach toward solving the problems of life.

On August 2, 1965, after reflecting on what he read, he literally jumped down from his double bunk in the old cellblock where he was housed and made the following notation on his wall calendar: "Decision to set up Narcotic Foundation." He also circled the 18th of the same month, his target date to approach prison officials to request permission to set up a drug rehabilitation program inside the prison walls.

Inmates from the Arizona State Prison with William Benitez

Officials denied permission for the following six months. Mr. Benitez's request to start a program consisting of twenty convicted drug addicts caused concern to officials who feared such a program might pose a security problem. (Such programs were rare in prisons during that decade.) Officials had little reason to believe that the request of a habitual drug addict and repeatedly convicted felon would ultimately result in one of the nation's most successful rehabilitation programs for substance abusers.

Benitez, far left, with inmates on the first Narconon course

Mr. Benitez persisted and finally assured officials that the program was needed and would not pose a threat to the safe and orderly operation of the prison. After being allowed to start the program on a trial basis, he founded the NARCONON program (NARCOtics-NONe) on February 19, 1966. Thus this year, 2009, is the 43rd anniversary of Narconon.

Benitez working with wife, June, in the Narconon office in the early '70's

Bill completed his prison term and was released in October 1967. Bill moved to California to expand Narconon and to make it available to persons in need. Mr. Hubbard and his organizations throughout supported the effort which has resulted in worldwide expansion.

Years later, Bill returned to Arizona and was hired as Inmate Liaison by former Arizona Department of Corrections Director, Ellis McDougall, in 1981. Then he became Hearing Officer for the Corrections Director at Central Headquarters on inmate complaints.

Bill and his wife, June, married soon after his release and had two beautiful daughters, Laura and Lana. Reminiscing, Bill attributed his success in marriage, his profession, and his life to principles he learned from Mr. Hubbard’s texts. Bill was quite a joker and believed in not taking life too seriously, but in his quieter moments he expresses, “Sure, I started Narconon, but its success and expansion is due to the dedication of so many staff and volunteers throughout the world who have made this program and its benefits available to the public. Staff and volunteers’ compensation is in knowing that they are providing society and its children a better environment in which to live. My thanks to them.”

William Benitez receiving an Hero’s award with Kirsty Alley and Chick Corea

Mr. Benitez passed away in 1999. Recently Gordy Weinand, his close friend and co-worker, and first graduate of the program, sent us his story about the early days:

Gordy Weinand at Narconon Arrowhead in 2003 being acknowledged as the first Narconon program graduate

Here is his success story :

"After years of drugs and alcohol, I got busted in Phoenix, Arizona. I then wound up at the State Prison in 1967. While there I met William Benitez. After several weeks of working together, he told me about a program he had started called Narconon. It was related to drugs. I told him about my history with drugs and drinking. He then invited me to attend a meeting.

The idea of getting out of my prison cell for two hours sounded good to me, so I went to my first meeting. In the beginning it seemed like a big joke. I took the reading materials back to my cell. The more I read about the effects drugs and drinking had on the body and the mind, the more things began to make sense to me. I began to understand why my behavior was the way it was. Thinking about the times I was told I was no good, I would never be anything, I was stupid and would never have anything, I began to understand why my behavior was the way it was. "It was the knowledge I learned in the beginning that showed me that I had a lot of ability. I could confront any problem instead of running away from myself and getting high. I could deal with anything. Things began to change for the better.

Several months before my release, Paramount Studios came to the prison to film a major motion picture. The movie was called "Riot" and featured the great Gene Hackman and Jim Brown. I had a considerably good part. Two weeks after the completion of the movie, I was released--and with a pretty good bankroll!

Upon my release from prison, I met up with William Benitez and other Narconon graduates in Phoenix, Arizona. We decided to move to Los Angeles. During that time, Bill got a job installing carpet. I worked with Bill for about eight years." We decided to try and open a Narconon center. We found an old garage that needed a lot of repairs. It needed a lot of new lumber to keep it from falling down. Our desk was made of saw-horses with pieces of plywood for the desktop.

We began by going out to schools, speaking to students about drugs. In between our work schedules we did everything we could to organize the new center. We were able to incorporate, and that became the basis of our expansion. Soon we were delivering a rehab program.

From those humble beginnings, I learned what a great feeling it was to be able to help someone else. I have dedicated my life to being able to help others. I look into the eyes of children and tell them what great people they are.

If you're asking "Does Narconon work?", I say, "Ask Gordy Weinand. I'm living proof!"

I am currently working with Narconon Georgia in Atlanta and will always be there to help the Narconon network." - Gordy Weinand

Narconon has also been acknowledged many times over the years around the world by families, friends and celebrities that have never hesitated to answer the call to support Narconon, and here is an example:

Priscilla Presley at the Grand Opening in Michigan

The Narconon center in Albion celebrates its grand opening, a 120-bed residential drug rehab center.

Albion, MI -- With the help of Priscilla Presley, the new Narconon center in Albion celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, June 3rd, 2006.

"I'm not alone here. Many people have had this problem, and I feel that something has to be done about it," said Priscilla at the grand opening, as she spoke of families with loved ones who have fallen into the trap of drugs.

Since 1966 Narconon has expanded around the world, being the leader in the field of Drug Rehabilitation and we thank the many supporters for the success and expansion of Narconon which has created happiness for the many thousands of graduates and their families.

I hope you enjoyed this short story, and I am sure you will celebrate with us the fact that rehabilitation is possible.

Narconon Hastings - reaching into the Community

UK is one of the most cosmopolitan countries in the world with many people of different ethnic backgrounds living here in harmony. Narconon UK mirrors this diversity of culture and religious belief, sharing the common goal of resolving the problems of addiction and unburdening the people we care about from the destructive effects of drugs and alcohol.

Narconon Hastings is also a training centre for the UK and further afield. Currently we have three Narconon Nepal staff members here doing their theory training and practical internships.

Bal, Animesh and Bibek, trainees from Nepal
Basanta Kunwar, the Director of Narconon Nepal, has recently visited the UK and Narconon Hastings. His aim was to raise drug awareness within the Nepalese Community and unite Narconon Hastings with the Nepalese people in England. Basanta has delivered a series of drug education seminars which he calls ‘Outness Programs’, to members of the Nepalese Community in various areas of London and South East England. As part of the seminar, Basanta demonstrates how each part of the Narconon Program actually helps a person to resolve the different problematic aspects of addiction so he can come ‘out’ of it, hence ‘ Outness Program’.

Basanta in Nepal doing Drug Education at a school
Last weekend, myself and Bal, one of the Nepalese trainees, were requested to join Basanta in Farnborough, Hampshire to one of the lectures. The event was organised and hosted by Mr. Damar Ghale, President of the NRN. We received an incredibly warm welcome. I was invited to speak about the drug problem in the UK on behalf of Narconon Hastings and was blessed with ‘highest honours’ from the Nepalese Community. Bal told his personal story to the audience who highly validated him for his success in beating his addiction and becoming an ethical and productive member of society. A far cry from his drug addicted life as one of the most prolific criminals in North Eastern Nepal.

So, united in our purpose to overcome addiction and the misery it causes, we will be furthering our relations with the Nepalese Community and helping them as much as we possibly can.
